Artist Janus Nuiten sets 'silo in motion'
The artist Janus Nuiten from Leiden (Holland) has bin working hard for the last weeks on painting a silo on the occasion of his exhibition of paintings at the farm of family Kolff.
This will be the third exhibition at this farm and during the last summer months the idea got born to start painting the silo which is located near the farm. This silo was originally used as a container to store leavings from a beer brewery, used as cattle fodder.
Silo as a piece of art
Janus Nuiten paints the silo from both the inside and outside. This results in three compositions - each suggesting their own motion. The way he paints the silo is directly inspired by the location and the use of earth colors let this art piece adapt into the surrounding landscape. The native textures of the silo - eroded through time - are framed and accentuated with gold-paint, A capricious root which has grown through the concrete will be painted poison-green.
The inside of the painted silo shows mainly wavy rounded structures while the outer side and the surrounding wall are set up in geometrical shapes. These different formations are suggesting several motions. It lays in the meaning that the visitor moves around the silo and goes down into to it to experience these different motions and so reviewing this piece of art.

Kunstenaar Janus Nuiten brengt 'silo in beweging'
De Leidse kunstenaar Janus Nuiten heeft de afgelopen weken hard gewerkt aan het beschilderen van een silo ter gelegenheid van zijn schilderijenexpositie op de boerderij van de familie Kolff.
Hij exposeert al voor de derde maal op deze locatie en tijdens een verblijf op de boerderij in de zomermaanden werd het idee geboren om de kale betonnen silo, die naast de boerderij staat, te gaan beschilderen. Deze silo werd ooit gebruikt voor de opslag van afval, afkomstig van de bierbrouwerij, dat indertijd werd gebruikt als veevoer.
Silo als kunstwerk
Janus Nuiten beschilderd de silo van buiten en van binnen, hetgeen resulteert in drie composities, die verschillende bewegingen suggereren. Hij beschildert de silo op een wijze die hem ter plekke wordt ingegeven wat resulteert in het gebruik van aardkleuren die het kunstwerk op laat gaan in het landschap. Daarbij laat janus zich ook leiden door de eigen textuur welke de door de tijd aangetaste silo kent. De hier en daar korrelige structuren accentueert hij met goudverf en kaders. Een grillige wortel die door het beton is gegroeid moet gifgroen van kleur worden.
De binnenkant van de beschilderde silo vertoont vooral golvende vormen terwijl de buitenkant en de aanpalende muur in geometrische vormen zijn opgezet. Die verschillende vormtalen suggereren diverse bewegingen. Het is de bedoeling dat de bezoeker zich om de silo heen beweegt en er in afdaalt om het totaal kunstwerk van die bewegingen in ogenschouw te nemen.
